RAF Harrowbeer 1940s Weekend 2019
Update July 2019
Although we have had to cancel this year’s 1940s Weekend on the 17th & 18th August, we understand that the [privately run] RAF Harrowbeer Archives, based in Knightstone Tearooms, is holding an ‘open weekend’ that weekend when you can view the Station and Squadron Operational Record Books (ORBs) for RAF Harrowbeer. We will also be opening the Dispersal Bay Air Raid Shelter, and have our display of photos on show. We will also be offering guided walks around the Airfield each afternoon starting from 1pm. We have also invited the MVT and local car clubs to drop by to see us.
We will be inviting visitors to make donations to the 1940s Event funds, so that we bring the full 1940s Event back in 2020. Please visit our ‘donations’ page to see how you can help.
N.B The RAF Harrowbeer Archives & Museum are privately owned and run by Michael & Lucy Hayes and are not involved with the organisation and running of the RAF Harrowbeer 1940s Weekend. We fully support the work they do to record the work of the Squadrons and Personnel who served at RAF Harrowbeer.
It is with great regret that the organisers of the RAF Harrowbeer 1940s Weekend have announced that, due to circumstances beyond their control, the 2019 event will not now take place.
This year’s 1940s Weekend had been set for the 17th & 18th August but Chairman Stephen Fryer said, “The dreadful weather that hit us last year has left us with too many issues to resolve in time for this year’s event to go ahead. We had hoped to carry on as normal but it has proved impossible. One of the major problems with last year was the loss of income on the Sunday, together with the extra costs associated with the clear-up after the cancellation. This has left us with insufficient funds to guarantee we could cover this year’s costs. We will now work towards running the event again in 2020.
The RAF Harrowbeer 1940s Weekend is a free-entry for all to attend, and the show relies entirely on visitor donations for its income. If you would like to help by making a donation to help fund the event, then please visit the website: http://www.rafharrowbeer1940s.com/sponsorship-donations/
The 2018 RAF Harrowbeer 1940s Weekend took place over the weekend of the 11th & 12th August 2018. Sadly, torrential rain on the Saturday night meant that the Sunday of the event had to be cancelled. The show ground and car parks were too dangerous for visitors to use. This was a bitter blow for us after twelve months of preparation, (and after such a lovely hot summer) but could not be helped. The cancellation meant our finances suffered a severe blow and we are seeking sponsorship and donations to help us fund this year’s event. To see how you can help, please see the sponsorship and donations page.
In 2018, we challenged the Shops at Yelverton to go ‘All 1940s’ and dress their premises in a 1940s theme. We then awarded the best one with the ‘RAF Harrowbeer Memorial Trophy’ for the best dressed shop or business. The 2018 Winner was ‘The Game Larder’. We also awarded ‘Beau’ at Leg O’Mutton with a ‘Highly Commended’ award as although the shops there were not included in the original challenge, Beau, March Hair, Dartmoor Bakery and Rockin Bikes all had a go anyway, and we felt their efforts should be rewarded!
The 2019 Challenge is the same! Can the Yelverton and Leg O’ Mutton shops surpass last year’s efforts!? Who will win the RAF Harrowbeer Memorial Trophy this year?
Please keep checking this site for further information. Remember we are also on Facebook. Search for RAF Harrowbeer.
